Lucknow : Dr. Rasappa Viswanathan, among top 2% scientist in world ranking and Internationally acclaimed sugarcane Pathologist Joined today as Director of Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow.
Dr. Viswanathan was Heading Division of Crop Protection at Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu). He has more than 31 years of experience as Researcher, Academician and agri expert.
His researches in sugarcane contributed in identifying 14 red rot resistant sugarcane varieties, development of sugarcane disease management protocol and varietal rejuvenation; these contributed in development of many high yielding cane varieties and sustaining them in the fields for longer years,
finally resulted in keeping country at the top in cane and sugar production. His research interest comprises genomic and molecular study of red-rot resistance in sugarcane. He identified new pathotypes of red rot CF12 and CF13;

commercialized virus indexing services to the tissue culture industry and developed mechanised sett treatment device to precisely apply agro-inputs and manage red-rot under field conditions.
In his accomplished research career Dr. Viswanathan published 275 research papers in high impact factor journals. He has vast experience in implementing collaborating programme with the support DBT, DST, Sugar Development Fund, SISMA etc.

He was elected fellow of prestigious National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi in 2016;
He is recipients of more than 15 awards of National repute. His accomplished vision in sugarcane research will thoroughly help in managing rampant and largely prevalent disease i.e. ‘red rot- cancer of sugarcane’ in sub tropical states including Uttar Pradesh up to a greater extent and benefitting lakhs of cane growers and sugar industry.
